A 54-year-old man died after he stopped his stepson from allegedly assaulting his girlfriend on Monday evening at Ombondeyomutse-wondjamba village in the Ruacana constituency.
Omusati commissioner Titus Shikongo said preliminary investigations have revealed that the 33-year-old suspect – the deceased’s stepson – lived in the same house as the deceased.
Shikongo said an argument started between the suspect and his girlfriend when she allegedly advising her mother and the deceased about their relationship issues.
“It is further alleged that the suspect was then angered by his girlfriend's interference and started assaulting her with fists. The suspect thereafter allegedly turned to his mother with a stick, who then ran away.”
Tragic end
Shikongo said the deceased tried to intervene, causing the suspect to turn on him and hit him over the head several times with sticks from the yard.
As a result, the police commissioner said, the stepfather died at the scene.
“The dry sticks were recovered and booked in as an exhibit.”
The body was transported to Omonawatjihozu mortuary and was later moved to the Okahao police mortuary for post-mortem to be conducted. The next of kin have been informed, and police investigations continue.
The suspect has been arrested and was charged yesterday. He is scheduled to appear in the Outapi Magistrate's Court today.
