OSHAKATI

A 37-year-old man allegedly took his own life on Sunday evening at his nephew’s baptism after informing those attending the festivities that he was going to commit suicide.

Petrus Simon was the master of ceremonies at the event celebrating his brother’s son, shortly before ending his life a few hours later.

Oshana police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Frieda Shikole, said the incident occurred at around 21h00 in Oshakati West.

She said the deceased was allegedly drinking heavily throughout the event.

He then started quarreling with "almost everybody" and was warned of possible arrest after he assaulted some of the guests, she said.

Confrontation

Shikole said there was a confrontation about his behaviour and Simon informed those in attendance that he was going to commit suicide before leaving the party for his bedroom.

He locked himself inside while party continued outside the house, she said.

The deceased was later discovered hanging from the roof of his bedroom with a belt around his neck.

Shikole said no foul play is suspected and police investigations into the matter continue.
