Livestock marketing declines

The total marketing of cattle for the year to date of 104 061 is down by 48.84% compared to last year.
According to a report on the latest trends in the livestock industry released by the Meat Board of Namibia, year-to-date slaughtering by export abattoirs has also decreased by 53.06% compared to last year.
The beef all-grade average producer price for May stood at N$44.11 per kilogram, which is 0.25% lower than the price in May last year.
Meanwhile, the total sheep marketing for the year to date stands at 169 305, down by 59.67% compared to last year.
Sheep slaughtering
Sheep slaughtering by export abattoirs stood at 3 617 in May.
The Meat Board said drought conditions in major sheep-producing areas of the south continue to take their toll. The Namibia A2 sheep price stood at N$67.97 per kg during May, which is N$1.40 per kg more than the April 2020 level.
On the other hand, the May 2020 all-grade average stood at N$45.13 per kg, which is 20.51% higher than the same month in 2019. On a year-to-date basis, the average of 2020 sheep producer carcass prices, at N$44.85 per kg, is 9.52% higher than the average of N$40.95 per kg recorded during January to May last year.
Goat and pig marketing
Goat and pig marketing declined by 52.38% and 9.39% respectively.
Meanwhile, pork imports increased by 24.63% for the year to date, reflecting an increased demand for cheaper protein.
The pork producer ceiling price currently stands at N$29.45 per kg, and the Pork Market Share Promotion Scheme remains in place until 30 September, unless extended by the Meat Board.
