A primary school, which caters for over 780 learners from Tsumkwe and the surrounding villages, recently became the recipient of school uniforms worth N$100 000.

The donation was made Ombara Fishing, an infant hake fishing company that handed over 76 jerseys, 88 school shirts, 131 pairs of shoes and 52 pairs of trousers which will be distributed to learners at the school.

Speaking at the handover, Ombara board chairperson Rasta Kaeka said the company has a core responsibility to “share the cake with other previously disadvantaged Namibians” through tendering assistance which empowers the next person.

Kaeka further said uniforms enable the teaching and learning environment to be conducive for learners regardless of their economic status.

“Uniform instils discipline in learners and motivates them to excel in school.”

A teacher at the school, Caiphus Kahaka, expressed gratitude for the donation, adding that the uniforms comes in very handy as learners are challenged with economic hardships as well as having to walk or travel long distances, which does not allow them easy access to shops to buy uniforms, among other things.

He added that this will unify the school and make it the same colour. He further said the teachers already gathered records of learners who may be most in need of the various items and will hand them out accordingly.

Also present at the handover, Tsumkwe constituency councillor Johannes Hausiku warned the learners to not take advantage of the new school uniforms and use them for activities such as looking after cattle, which will cause the uniforms wear and tear.

Haufiku urged other companies to also lend a helping hand to the community of Tsumkwe.

“Wearing the school uniform can encourage children to take the responsibility more seriously”, he said, adding that looking the same is vital for learners as they are more inspired to focus on their studies.

Furthermore, he said the uniforms will be distributed fairly to learners regardless of their ethnic group.
