Khune popularity remains despite limited action

Kickoff

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has again underlined his place in domestic football despite yet another difficult campaign.

Khune has yet to earn any minutes in the 16 league games that Chiefs have played to date with the closest he has come has been when he sat on the bench just once against Baroka in August.

Since then, the veteran goalkeeper has had to watch from a distance as Daniel Akpeyi muscles his way back to prominence between the posts with either Bruce Bvuma or Brandon Peterson as cover.

The only appearance that Khune has made this term was in the MTN8 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns when he conceded twice during regulation time.

However, for all his evident troubles he has found himself selected to play for Warriors FC in the DStv Compact Cup proving just how popular he remains with fans.

He will have clubmate Bruce Bvuma providing competition between the posts in this new competition to be played later this month.

Players taking part in the Compact Cup were voted for by supporters.

The 34-year-old is always in the top ranks in matters related to voting by fans regardless of his form as was evidenced at the beginning of this season in the Carling Black Label Cup.

Khune has faced a variety of challenges for the past three years related to both form and injuries which has limited his matchday contribution.

For a decade he was guaranteed of playing for both club and country whenever he was available to play but he is now struggling to even sit on the bench.

Despite featuring in 43 of the last 146 games for the club in the period from the start of the 2018/19 season and subsequently losing his Bafana Bafana place he is still a fan darling.

His injuries were the reason the club brought in Akpeyi in January 2019 and the Nigerian has since played more even though he is not a favourite amongst supporters.
