Infant dies after being sneaked out of hospital
A nine-month-old baby girl died on Saturday after she was allegedly sneaked out of the Swakopmund State Hospital by her grandmother and a friend.
According to the crime investigations coordinator for the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the deceased, Getani Dignity Kellis, was admitted to hospital on Sunday. She was being treated for diarrhoea and vomiting.
“The senior nurse at hospital said the baby's condition was stable and she was recovering well,” said Iikuyu.
On Saturday at around 14:00 the baby's grandmother and her friend allegedly sneaked her out of the hospital without the nurses' knowledge and permission. According to Iikuyu they took the baby to a woman in Mondesa who is said to be a faith healer.
“It is further alleged that upon arrival at the said house, the baby was not blinking or breathing. The said woman only prayed for the baby and refused to massage her and she informed the ladies to take the baby to the hospital and she immediately notified the police,” said Iikuyu.
At around 15:00 on the same day, the baby was declared dead by a doctor who requested a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. The body was taken to Walvis Bay police mortuary.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
