Nearly 500 bags of litter were left on beaches, dunes and parks by visitors to the coast over the festive season.

A whopping 480 bags of garbage were collected by the ministry of environment in the Dorob National Park in the wake of the festive season, the ministry announced yesterday.

Photos showed large bags of waste straining at the seams that were collected, loaded and disposed of by the ministry’s workers this week.

In a statement the ministry said litter could be seen “everywhere on our beaches, sand dunes and general surroundings” during the clean-up campaign.

Irresponsible

“We condemn this type of irresponsible behaviour,” said Romeo Muyundu, the ministry spokesperson.

“The ministry is disappointed to observe that holidaymakers had no regard for environmental safety and park rules and regulations. Unattended garbage could be observed everywhere,” he said.

The ministry stressed that visitors to the coast must refrain from throwing their garbage everywhere they please, and should instead find a responsible way to dispose of their waste.

“Litter/waste becomes unattractive in our beautiful parks and country in general. Furthermore, unattended waste can contaminate our land, air, water sources and in particular our oceans, affecting aquatic species on which our fishing sector depends.”

Littering was not the only problem observed at the coast this festive season.

“People launching firecrackers, playing loud music, off-road driving and getting out of their vehicles in national parks,” were among the many antisocial behaviours observed over the festive season.
