Hockey league shifts up a gear
The fourth round of the Bank Windhoek National Field Hockey Premier League took place this past weekend in Windhoek.
As it stands, Windhoek Old Boys (WOBSC) and Saints both have a two-point cushion in the men and women's leagues, respectively.
Men's league
WOBSC played Deutscher Turn- und Sportverein (DTS). The first half of the match was tightly contested, and ended with a 1-1 stalemate. However, WOBSC dominated the second half, eventually winning 5-2. Siyabonga Martins netted twice during the encounter.
On Saturday, Saints took on BDO Wanderers. Wanderers head coach Johan Wehye pushed his team to the limit, but they eventually suffered a 3-0 loss. Fagen Hansen's goal opened the floodgates for the Saints, who were quick on the ball.
Nust's struggles continued, as they went down 9-0 to Saints. The students, however, have shown great tenacity and continue to improve. On Sunday, BDO Wanderers played WOBSC. It was a game WOBSC expected to win. BDO Wanderers, on the other hand, had other ideas and kept it a tight contest. WOBSC eventually won the game 4-1, with Dylan Finch scoring a hat-trick for his team.
Women's league
Saints Angels played DTS, and as predicted, it was a hard-fought match that was paused all-square at 1-1 during halftime. The second half saw goals in quick succession from both sides, resulting in a draw.
The Saints A-team are the currently champions and later took on DTS. As anticipated, the champions controlled the game from the start and won 5-0.
WOBSC faced BDO Wanderers and showed the kind of form that saw them being crowned champions a couple of seasons ago.
They grabbed the upper-hand over BDO Wanderers in a game that their opponents expected to win. However, it was the maroon team that triumphed 3-1, with Wilri van Taak scoring twice.
The next round of fixtures will take place this coming weekend at the Wanderers and Windhoek Gymnasium hockey fields in Windhoek. For more information please contact Jacobus Coetzee at 081 860 8955 or send an email to [email protected].
