The passing of former president of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) Katuutire Kaura (81) over the weekend has led to outpourings of condolences and remembrances.
A statement released by the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), formerly known as DTA, said Kaura was an “iron-willed and gallant leader who played an unmistakable role in shaping the political discourse of his time.” PDM leader McHenry Venaani said his death “robs the Namibian political sphere of a wealth of experience.”
Kaura served as president of the then DTA from 1998 to 2013.
He was also a member of Namibia's Constituent Assembly and served as a member of the National Assembly from 1990 to 2015, when he brought to a close a legislative career spanning over two and a half decades.
President Hage Geingob appointed Kaura in 2015 as an adviser to the late Kunene governor, Angelika Muhuarukua.
Venaani in his statement said Kaura's death was met with “great shock and sadness” and extended profound sympathy to his family and friends.
Geingob issued a statement in which he said: “I have learned with sadness about the passing of Hon. Katuutire Kaura. During this hour of grief, I wish to convey sincere condolences to his wife Viky, the children, the Kaura and Mbuende families. May his soul rest in peace.”
Kaura reportedly died at the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek around 23:00 on Saturday.
