Five regions vie to host Newspaper Cup
LIMBA MUPETAMI
Five regions have announced their interest to host the 2019 and 2020 editions of the Newspaper Cup.
The Namibia Football Association (NFA) announced on Thursday that Hardap, //Karas and Oshana have shown an interest to host the 2019 edition, while
//Karas, Kavango East and Omaheke have submitted bids for the 2020 edition.
The five regions were instructed to submit definitive bids, including host agreements with towns, local authorities and regional governors by last Friday.
This will be followed by presentations to the organising committee on 25 July, after which an announcement of the successful bids for the 2019 and 2020 tournaments will be made.
Some of the criteria for hosting the tournament are that the host town must have a stadium with an artificial or natural grass pitch and a minimum capacity for 2 000 people, suitable lighting for night games and a public address system.
Having medics on standby for the duration of the tournament, as well as catering and security are also among the conditions for hosting.
Bidding towns were also informed that the NFA, The Namibian newspaper and Nedbank Namibia retain the commercial rights to the competition.
There should also be acceptable accommodation for regional delegations, as well for match, NFA, newspaper and Nedbank Namibia officials.
The Newspaper Cup is an under-20 football tournament for male players from all 14 regions.
Next year Omaheke will have the honour of defending their crown, which they won after beating Kavango East.
