Fishcor fails to pay January salaries

Employees at state fishing company Fishcor did not receive their salaries yesterday as expected, while portions of their December salaries also remain unpaid.

Fishcor is at the centre of an investigation of the Fishrot bribery scheme, where over N$75 million was clandestinely siphoned out of the company by powerful politicians – portions of which funded activities of the Swapo elective congress of 2017.

Fishcor board chairperson Mihe Gaomab II says the company is working to ensure workers are paid for December and January.

Fishcor’s employees did not receive their full December and yesterday they did not receive their January salaries, normally paid on the 25th of each month.

Commenting on the delay, Gaomab said Fishcor was addressing the matter.

“We are working on it procedure-wise, hopefully all paid December and January [salaries],” Gaomab said without providing a definitive timeline.

Pushed to comment on when salaries could be paid, Goamab said: “We aim to this month.”

Queries on the same issue to Fishcor finance manager Paulus Ngalangi were unanswered.

Gaomab said the company found itself in a rough patch because of the state of the economy.

“The economic conditions of today are very difficult for any company and business in the public and private sectors, but we as a board remain committed to ensure normalisation of employment wages as per the salary processing in terms of the human resource policy as well as to attend to our fixed overhead obligations,” he said.

Something fishy

An industry insider who had spoken to Namibian Sun questioned Fishcor’s inability to pay its workers their salaries as required.

“With these quotas they don’t pay anything for when many other hake companies have to pay and buy quotas, which is extra cost for them which Fishcor does not have to pay for,” the insider said.

Fishcor’s inability to pay workers’ salaries was a mystery, the insider said.

“How Fishcor cannot sustain their business in the hake operation is a big mystery and something very much is wrong here and needs to be investigated,” the insider added.
