Facelift for Samora Machel football field

The Samora Machel football field situated at the Hakahana three-way in Katutura got a facelift from Welwitschia Construction over the past week.
The field, which is not regarded as a stadium by the City of Windhoek, attracts many spectators from nearby locations such as Wanaheda, Havana, Greenwell, Goreangab and Hakahana when football matches are hosted there.
The Samora Machel informal settlement soccer league hosts 18 football teams.
Welwitschia Construction, which is currently engaged in construction at Ongos Valley, came to the rescue of the league, agreeing to upgrade the unlevelled field as part of their social responsibility drive.
Emrich Hamata, a member of the league committee, told Nampa on Tuesday that negotiation to upgrade their sloppy pitch was initiated by the league’s administrator and coordinator Boma Kandjambanga.
“He approached them to ask for assistance to level the ground and they agreed to do it for free,” he said.
Hamata added that it was dangerous to play on the unlevelled pitch as players get injured when they fall, hence the decision by the committee to ask the local contractor for assistance.
“We spoke to the City of Windhoek before about this field, but they never came back to us despite them sponsoring the Kasi Cup tournament,” Hamata said.
When Nampa visited the site, Welwitschia Construction was busy levelling the ground with their machinery.
Meanwhile, Brave United owner Fillemon Mulukeni said they were in need of the field and they are happy about the facelift, which was long overdue.
