Epukiro All-Stars win Omaheke derby
Epukiro All-Stars won the Omaheke football derby under the auspices of the Namibia Rural Sport Development Federation (NRSDF) that was held at the Khomasdal Stadium on Friday in the capital.
The one-day event is aimed at preparing the Epukiro and Otjinene sports associations for the annual NRSDF tourney in November.
One of the competition organisers Ngatuuane Hange said the tournament is also a platform where both the Epukiro and Otjinene sports associations generate funds to sustain themselves. “Of course sponsors are not forthcoming with regard to rural sports development, therefore we cannot sit and close our hands, we have to help ourselves,” he emphasised. Epukiro All-Stars took the lead early in the first half through their captain Apollo Hangero's penalty, after Kandungu Kavari was brought down in the penalty box. However, Kaskas Nunuhe equalised for Otjinene in the second half with a spectacular shot. The game was then decided by penalties.Epukiro went on to win the sixth edition of the tournament by defeating their Otjinene counterparts 4-3 on penalties. The competition also saw the two constituencies' Namibia Premier League (NPL) players featuring in the first game of the evening.A sensational goal from Roger Katjiteo in the second half sealed a win for Epukiro's NPL players against their Otjinene contemporaries. “We thought of our premier league players from the two constituencies who are still waiting for the league to start and organised a curtain-raiser for them,” explained Hange. He added that the match is also a morale-booster for the All-Stars players to play at a higher level.
Epukiro All-Stars coach Mukuviro Siririka said he was pleased with the win and the team's display.
“Despite some errors here and there, we have a young team and we managed to defeat Otjinene's strong team that have been dominating in this affair. This derby will boost our morale for the upcoming NRSDF Aron Tjatindi tourney in November,” added Siririka.
So far, Otjinene have won four of the derbies and Epukiro two.
