Ekandjo, Shaliaxwe triumph
Local marathon runners Jeremia Shaliaxwe and Lena Ekandjo won the Ya Toivo Half Marathon in Windhoek on Saturday.
Jeremia Shaliaxwe won the men's 21.1km Ya Toivo Half Marathon in a time of 01:14:05, while Lena Ekandjo won the women's race in a time of 01:33:18.
Shaliaxwe was followed home by Sakaria Tangeni in a time of 01:14:10 and Shipinga Simon was third in a time of 01:14:17.
Ekandjo was followed home by Ottilie Hamukoto in a time of 01:33:23 and third was Lisa Dreyer in a time of 01:33:56.
In the 10km women's race Shinomwene Shilongo won in a time of 37:16, while Anna Amukoto took second place in a time of 39:1. Helena Iipinge was third in a time of 42:29. The men's 10km race was won by Simon Paulus (33:01), followed by Ngilyendele Kornelius in a time of 33:05
The marathon was well-attended and organised by the Windhoek City Runners Club, with the aim of celebrating the legacy of the late Herman Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo, an anti-apartheid activist, politician and political prisoner.
One of the organisers from Windhoek City Runners Club, Frans Amakali, said the turnout was great despite the rain that hit the city throughout Saturday.
