Disc Boys Football Club (FC) were crowned the winners of the annual Ondjola Sports Bash after defeating Windhoek-based Young Generation 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw at the Ondjila Sports Stadium.
A statement issued by organiser Pinehas Jack Ipinge last Thursday said 26 football teams, four netball teams and three volleyball teams participated in the tournament.
The 2019 Ondjola Sports Bash took place in late December with total prize money of N$85 000.
The statement said many of the teams travelled from as far as Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Outapi to take part.
The first day saw teams play in a round-robin format to decide the seeding for Tuesday's knockout stages.
“The knockout stages provided all the typical drama of the beautiful game with several games decided by last-minute goals or the dreaded penalty shootout.
There were notable achievements throughout the tournament such as teamwork, discipline, talent and determination,” Ipinge said.
Disc Boys from Okahao claimed top honours, winning N$15 000 and a trophy, while Young Generation from Windhoek scooped N$10 000 as final losers. Super Eagles from Outapi and Onangalo from Uukwaluudhi each received N$5 000 as semi-final losers.
Ipinge said more than 45 goals were scored during the tournament.
In the netball category, ODC won 38-22 against Olwana Babes, while in the volleyball category, Ondjola A reigned supreme after narrowly defeating Ondjola B 25-23.
Ipinge applauded everyone who made the tournament a success and called on Namibia Premier League teams and netball teams to use the platform to scout for talented players.
