DBN looks westward

Local authorities, tourism establishments, manufacturers and mining interests are encouraged to engage with the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) next week when Walvis Bay hosts the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo.
Taking place between 26 and 29 October, the expo provides a convenient point of contact for those doing business in the region.
Expressing excitement over the opportunity, DBN spokesman Jerome Mutumba said the bank was particularly interested in opportunities to support manufacturing, transport and logistics, light and heavy industry and tourism ventures.
Citing the Walvis Bay Corridor and the benefits of SADC regionalisation as stimulus for enterprise growth in the transport and logistics sector, Mutumba said the sector was primed for growth.
Likewise, he said opportunities exists for expansion of existing industrial operations and start-ups, to support developments at the Port of Walvis Bay, as well as major developments currently happening in the mining and marine sectors.
“Tourism can be further developed through the establishment of additional enterprises in the accommodation and restaurants sub-sector. Although Walvis Bay and Swakopmund have a high degree of activity in this field, there is room for additional capacity in smaller Erongo centres and conservancies,” Mutumba said.
Addressing local authorities specifically, the DBN executive urged them to consider population growth in their regions and what that would mean for their planning and enterprise growth.
Water provision, servicing of land, electricity requirements and road construction are all factors to consider in planning ahead, he said.
The DBN, Mutumba said, has a sound and sustainable pool of money which could be utilised to develop the region.
To date, the DBN has financed projects worth N$1.9 billion in the Erongo Region, which created 7 703 new jobs and 2 424 temporary positions.
“The largest beneficiary sectors in Erongo have been construction with approvals of N$848.4 million, electricity and water with N$454.57 million, real estate and business services with N$194.74 million and manufacturing with N$116.33 million,” the DBN said.
