Criminals target the elderly

16 June 2020 | Crime

The Joint Crime Prevention Forum (JCPF) under the auspices of the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) has warned people who live in isolated places such as farms not to keep large amounts of money in their homes.

Thinus Pretorius, the chairperson of the JCPF, says the elderly should accept that they are a soft target for robbers and should take the necessary precautions.

This follows a farm attack on an elderly couple about 30 km outside of Otjiwarongo on the Kalkfeld road on Saturday night.

According to the police the couple, a 76-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman, were threatened with a gun and assaulted by five armed robbers at Farm Abrevelde.

The robbers stole N$115 000, 20 000 euro, cellphones, four hunting rifles and a revolver. The police found the four rifles in the veld.

The had to wait for 12 hours in the cold before their workers alarmed neighbours on Sunday morning.

The Otjiwarongo Neighbourhood Watch and police responded immediately. Besides trauma and exposure, the couple were not hurt during the attack.

They were taken to the local hospital for observation and are in a stable condition, said Pretorius.

He said police investigators are confident that they have sufficient information to make arrests soon.

The JCPF encouraged people who live in isolated places to see to it that their neighbours or crime-prevention organisations are aware of their movements.

“If you are not involved in such organisations, get involved. Protect your property with what you can afford. Burglar proof and get a dog to alarm you,” Pretorius advised.

In the Kavango West Region, a 57-year-old woman, Nipembe Behetta, was kicked to death at Gcigco village on Friday night. Her 20-year-old son has been arrested.

In another murder case, the body of a 33-year-old man was found at Droë Putz Farm near Tses on Saturday morning. He was allegedly stabbed by a 45-year-old man on Friday night when he intervened in a fight between the suspect and his girlfriend. The suspect has been arrested.
