The sports ministry has introduced cricket as a sport code at schools at Khorixas in the Kunene Region for the first time.

The introduction of cricket comes after four coaches were trained by Cricket Namibia last month to give basic training on the sport to interested youth regional sports officer Esna Haradoes told Nampa on Tuesday.

Two teachers from local schools and two community members were trained, and teachers will be mobilising learners to take up the sport while the community members will be training interested youths. Schools in the town currently only offer football, netball and athletics.

“The coaches were trained and we are now busy consulting schools to put up notices so that learners and youth who are interested can contact us,” she said.

Haradoes added that the introduction of cricket at school level will enable children to try out a different sport code, and that it will help keep young people off the streets.

“We are also planning on taking the sport to Fransfontien, Kamanjab and Outjo shortly because we want it to be played everywhere in the region. That way we will be able the select a regional team to represent the region at national tournaments,” she said.
