Now finally out of high school, a bevy of opportunities suddenly presented themselves to Valdermar Joana. Last year he enrolled into the Lusofona University of Humanities in Spain. He is currently pursuing a degree in architecture.

According to him he chose this programme as he believes he is the type of person who loves to create new things.

“I also intend to better the future environmentally wise through the usage of architecture and honestly speaking, it was my second option as my first option was animation, but I had to change because it’s hard to get a job in animation while being an African black man,” he says.

Joana says at first the language barrier was a challenge as he never studied Portuguese or Spanish in high school.

Speaking to The Zone, Joana said one of the things he likes about his university is that people are always connected to each other.

“We often have classes outside of the university and there is a natural park right outside of the university in which the lecturers advise us to take some minutes and walk by there every day.”

His biggest surprise in his study adventure is that if one is too creative, people won’t necessarily like you and they will see you as competition and move away from you.

His advice to current matric learners is to get their grades sorted before moving.

“This is vital for anything in Europe and make friends before you come, it helps a lot. Another tip is, don’t get too excited in the beginning, because if you do, things get boring fast,” he says.

Joana says he would have started architecture long ago and would be a little bit more serious with his finances and make friends as he arrived.

After graduation he plans to put in action three environmental ideas he has developing for southern Africa, which he believes will be a tremendous benefit for the whole continent.

The things he loves about the city he is living in currently are the natural parks, the street art and the amazing people.

“At the moment is this lake in front of the university that has many ducks, koi fish and many red blood trees and my favourite part of the city is the huge forest. It is so calming and relaxing, you can see so many different animals there.”
