Coming in hot

Launched in 2018 and having the first circuit commenced at the beginning of 2019, this has been a great platform for schools around Namibia to compete in three sports codes: Sevens rugby, fast five netball and six-a-side soccer.

This year, the Namib Poultry Gravity Cup was held at Wanderers in Windhoek from 21 to 23 October.

On Day 1, it started off with under-19 rugby, which saw Delta Secondary School playing against Windhoek Technical High School (HTS), with the match ending in a 19-19 draw.

On Saturday, the Wanderers field was packed with parents and learners who came out in numbers to support and play.

The U/17 netball captain of Elnatan Privaatskool, Stephanie Mostert, couldn't contain her excitement about her team going to the semi-finals.

“We played against Academia Secondary School and Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool (WAP) where we won both matches. Now we are preparing ourselves to play against Windhoek Gymnasium. I am really proud of my teammates and we did really well, even though it's our first games for the year,” she said.

U/15 netball captain of the HTS team, Ngatuuane Kaiuina, said her team experienced a lot with the games they played.

As a team, they now know how to better play with each other and that it's not all about winning, but the experience, she said.

Having lost all their matches, the HTS U/15 netball team members are still looking forward to next year's games.

Uandje Kauraisa, a St George's Diocesan School U/13 soccer player, mentioned even though it's really hot he looked forward to the day and their matches against other schools.

“All the matches we played were good, we won all of them and we are only left with two more games today. In our last game, I am looking forward to many things including playing with my teammates, which will be fun. And we just really want to win as well,” he said.

As circuit 1 has come to an end, all the schools that qualified for circuit 2 should prepare themselves.
