Clearing the shelters one adoption at a time

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Windhoek held their Clear the Shelter day on Saturday, 9 November. A total of 19 applications for the adoption of animals were received. That is four times the number of applications the SPCA receives on a regular Saturday. “Our team has been hard at work ever since, processing the adoption applications. Several animals have already been able to go home,” said Hanna Rhodin, the general manager of the SPCA. Not only did people apply to adopt on Saturday, but it was also an invitation for people to consider adopting an animal rather than buying one from a pet shop or a backyard breeder. “Our animals are up to date with their vaccinations, de-wormed, sterilised, and microchipped. If you do all that by yourself at a vet it would likely amount to N$4 000. Not only is it financially sound to adopt an animal, but it is a conscious effort to give an animal in need a second chance,” Rhodin added.
