City’s cyclists rejoice over bike lanes

WINDHOEK
Yesterday, at the corner of Shanghai and Florence Nightingale streets in Khomasdal, City of Windhoek - in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) - launched bicycle lanes, which will be of great benefit to the city’s cyclists.
The lanes are being constructed under the ‘Move Windhoek’ project, which aims to promote affordable mobility alternatives such as cycling and create access to sustainable transport as well as increase the safety of non-motorised transport, amongst other objectives.
The launch of the cycling lanes came about after the City, along with the works ministry and with funding from GIZ, embarked on the process of developing a sustainable urban transport master plan for Windhoek.
The 20-year plan identifies the infrastructure and service investment required to improve the public transport system and non-motorised transport provisions in Windhoek, Rehoboth, Okahandja and at Hosea Kutako Airport. This is according to Windhoek mayor, Job Amupanda, the guest speaker at the event.
“Non-motorised transport under the umbrella of sustainable mobility has been a topic on the lips too long, and today it’s finally on the ground,” Amupanda said.
Pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly city
“I wish to thank all the stakeholders who have worked together relentlessly to make this day a reality. Once the city becomes a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly city, they will remember this day as the start of a remarkable development,” GIZ’s Ursula Hein-Rooinasie said.
An avid cyclist from Windhoek, Nina Gabriel said the cycling lanes will help greatly as many cyclists have lost their lives in the capital city due to the lack of safe lanes.
“The lanes will in general just really benefit us all,” she said.
