Chinese businessman shot at Ondangwa
The killing of a Chinese national at his Ondangwa residence last weekend has compelled the police to once again request business people to refrain from keeping large amounts of money at their shops and or at home.
Chinese businessman Ri Tiauming, age unknown, was shot and killed by suspect(s) who proceeded to steal N$20 000 and two Samsung cell phones. The incident happened during the early morning hours of Saturday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thomas Aiyambo said a 9mm pistol was used in the commission of the crime.
“No arrest has been made yet and the suspects are unknown,” he said.
He urged anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call him directly at 081 485 6578.
Aiyambo lamented the fact that some business people - especially those of Chinese origin - continue to ignore police warnings about keeping large sums of cash.
Aiyambo said shop employees are often indirectly involved in such robberies because they are the ones who reveal information about where the money is kept.
“Keeping large amounts of money is an open invitation to criminals and places one’s own life in danger. We have held several meetings with business people, telling them to take precautionary measures, including avoiding keeping big quantities of money, but it seems our exhortations fell on deaf ears,” he said.
He said the festive season is around the corner and criminals are already working around the clock to get their hands on the money that other people earned through hard work.
