The 17-year-old accused of assault and child abuse has been released into the care of his grandmother after appearing before the Outapi magistrate’s court last week.
According to Titus Shikongo, the Omusati police commander, the teenager was given a ‘warrant of liberation’, which allows him to seek legal representation while in the care of his guardian.
“The victim, the five-year-old, has been removed from the homestead of the accused and his grandmother and is currently in the care of other relatives,” said Shikongo.
The teenager’s next court appearance is scheduled for 28 June 2021.
Shikongo also told Namibian Sun that there are currently no charges against the boy who recorded the assault and he will be called as a State witness.
“Unless, of course, during the court proceedings the videographer is implicated in any way, then further action will be taken against him.”
The 17-year-old was arrested two weeks ago after he appeared in a video recording assaulting a five-year-old girl. The video, which went viral, was filmed at Oshaala village in the Onesi constituency on 6 April 2021.
