Lezaan le Roux is a second-year student at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography in South Africa. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in visual communication, majoring in multimedia design.

After high school, she took a gap year and then enrolled into university last year. According to her, choosing this course was easy as she has always loved art.

“I had painting as a subject at school. When I was at Bloemhof High School (in Stellenbosch), my art teacher introduced this course to me. She wanted me to never lose my art skills and said I must study something I love to do and would love to do every day of my life,” she said.

She took a year off school and academics so she could focus on her art and compile the portfolio needed to apply for the course.

Getting into the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography was not challenging, however, she said the process of waiting for an acceptance letter is nerve-racking.

What Le Roux likes most about her university are the facilities, the recreational area, the people and the art.

“Our academy is a place where the people are walking art pieces and the facilities are designed around the weird people in the building. The chilling area is the one place where we can talk and enjoy the beautiful sun rays.”

She not much surprised her about the institution, however, she was surprised to pass her first year as a visual communications student.

Her advice to young people planning to study beyond Namibian borders is to get out in the world and do it.

“Most people in Namibia grow up and grow old there and never get out of the country. So if you are as privileged as me, then do it,” she added.

After graduation, she plans to return to Namibia and work at Bläk Advertising in Windhoek.

She would also like to travel and expand her knowledge in design to bring some of that culture back home.
