Jan Bylveld was born at Aranos and attended the Aranos Primary School and Mariental Secondary School. He started his two-year compulsory military service at the Osona base outside Okahandja and was then sent to the Tempe base in Bloemfontein. In the second year of his national service Bylveld had to train new troops at Walvis Bay. On 16 February 1987 he started working for South African Breweries (SAB) in Pretoria and 2014 he moved to Okahandja with the opening of the new brewery there.
Bylveld has been working for Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) for 34 years. He started as a junior supervisor and then became a team leader.
“I love working for AB InBev as they allowed me to develop myself to get N6, a Packaging Diploma as well as Level 5 Occupationally Directed Education, Training and Development Practitioner (ODETDP). I am happy to be working for a company that takes care of its people,” he says.
He currently works as a training controller where he implements and evaluates the effectiveness of training, initiating the Voyager Plant Optimisation (VPO) learning and development process at the Welwitschia Brewery. Bylveld’s day starts at 07:00 and ends at 16:00. He spends most of the time on the shop floor coaching employees. “I look for opportunities to improve processes and ensure the employees are working safely,” he says proudly.
When asked what his biggest achievement has been, he said he has had a stable performance throughout his career and survived three retrenchments. The hard-working Bylveld was involved in the implementation of VPO and in particular, the management pillar.
What he loves about his job is the ability to interact with people and help them to excel in their jobs. Bylveld says he wants to be happy and be part of a top-performing brewery in the AB InBev Africa Zone before he retires.
Bylveld wishes his children would permanently move to Namibia from South Africa so they could explore the wonders of Namibia together.
