A wave of suicides ravaged the country over the weekend, with the youngest victim just 10 years old.
A boy (10) committed suicide at Opuwo by hanging himself after being sent to fetch water by his step-mother, an order he refused.
He was found hanging from a tree on Friday morning, and used a shoelace to carry out the act.
In a separate incident in Walvis Bay, a 29-year-old South African national hung himself at the premises of a veterinary practice. His body was discovered after a veterinarian had gone to inspect the flat the man lived in, located behind the practice.
In Outapi, a 40-year-old man hung himself from the roof of his shack with an electric cable. While the man left no suicide note, his next of kin have been informed.
Hit-and-run
Meanwhile in Okongo, a man is alleged to have hit a pedestrian and fled the scene. The pedestrian was rushed to the Oshakati State Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The man has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, failing to render assistance to an injured person and fleeing the scene of the accident.
A case of culpable homicide was opened in Oshakati after a 34-year-old man drove over an 18-year-old girl on the Onhuno-Oshakati road. The victim died on the scene.
In Opuwo, a 46-year-old man has been accused of raping a 13-year-old girl. The man is alleged to have dragged the girl to his house in the presence of the girl’s niece - who fled - and proceeded to rape her.
The man and the girl were discovered the next day by police and the girl’s parents. He will appear in court today.
