67 000 graduates not jobless - SPYL
Swapo Party Youth League secretary Ephraim Nekongo has rejected an assessment released by the ministry of higher education which said that 67 000 graduates are unemployed, saying it was misleading information.
He made this comment during a recent media briefing held by the youth league.
Without backing up his claim, Nekongo said it was not possible that so many graduates are jobless.
“This thing is not true… I do not believe in that 67 000,” Nekongo said, without any evidence to support his claim that the figure provided by the ministry was not accurate.
The ministry recently revealed that there were 67 000 unemployed graduates, who could not find jobs.
This was made public by deputy director Nhlanhla Lupahla during a dialogue on the perspectives of unemployed graduates.
Nekongo also asked SPYL members to resolve matters internally before airing their differences in public.
According to him, Swapo party structures make provision for members to solve their issues internally.
He also dismissed the claim that the youth wing was not independent enough, and was taking orders from its mother organisation, without questioning them.
“Despite remarks made by some political and social scientists that the current youth league is not vibrant, because there seems to be no tension between the youth league and President Hage Geingob, these statements are not only counterproductive, but lack substance, as there are various methods of engagement between the youth league and its leadership and therefore we are not compelled to report our engagement with the president to the media,” Nekongo said.
The youth league also recommended the removal of veterinary cordon fence, with Nekongo saying: “We cannot say there is no solution to the imposition of veterinary cordon fence. I think it high time we take a political decision to see that the fence is moved to the border of Namibia and Angola.”
Nekongo also said that the youth league would be presenting a position paper at the upcoming land conference scheduled for the first week of October.
“With regard to land, we commend government for initiating the long awaited second land conference. I therefore would like to announce that the youth league will prepare a position paper for presentation during the land conference. This position paper will be based on broad-based research, which will be done via a consultative process.”
