To Yokohama - Opening new doors of cooperation with Japan

From 20 to 22 August 2025, the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) will be held in Yokohama City, Japan. Based on the long-standing partnership between Africa and Japan, this conference, under the theme "Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa", will be attended by Prime Minister Dr. Elijah Tjitunga Ngurare, who will lead the government delegation from Namibia.TICAD is a framework for African support launched by the Japanese government in 1993, and it has the longest history as an international forum for partnership with Africa. It is characterised by emphasising the ownership of African countries themselves and the cooperation of the international community, in collaboration with co-hosting organisationssuch as the African Union (AU), the United Nations, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and the World Bank. The relationship between Namibia and Japan has also been built on this spirit, through sincere and long-term cooperation. For example, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) continues to provide support in various fields such as education, agriculture, industrial human resource development, and logistics infrastructure development in Namibia, with vocational training programs for young people and primary education being particularly highly regarded.In recent years, Japanese private companies have also been paying attention to Namibia. There is potential for collaboration in the form of technology transfer and sustainable investment in strategic resources such as offshore oil and natural gas resources, rare earths and even green hydrogen, which are expected to be developed.The Namibian government welcomes the stance of Japanese companies that emphasise transparency and consideration for sustainability, and this TICAD9 is an important opportunity for expanding cooperation among the private sector.Prime Minister Ngurare's visit to Japan is also an opportunity to show the path to shaping a sustainable future together with Japan on urgent issues such as climate change measures, food security, and human resource development.During the conference, in addition to a summit meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba, many thematic events are planned, and it is expected to be a step towards strengthening cooperation for the realisation of Namibia's national strategy "Vision 2030" and NDP6.For the future of Namibia, cooperation with Japan is expected to be a bridge of hope, and it is anticipated that the cooperative relationship between the two countries will move to a new stage through TICAD9.*His Excellency Shinichi Asazuma is the ambassador of Japan to Namibia.
