Small enterprises contribute roughly 12% of GDP, yet around 90% reportedly close within five years. Across Africa, estimates of early-stage start-up failure run between 70% and 80%. Infrastructure removes those bottlenecks so that more ideas survive each transition.The evidence from other emerging ecosystems is encouraging. Africa now counts more than 1,000 active innovation hubs across 53 countries, and research by the International Trade Centre suggests hubs improve start-up survival. Google reports that start-ups in its African programmes survive at over 90%, a result it credits to mentorship, technical guidance and training rather than funding alone. Namibia is moving too: it climbed 11 places to 91st in the 2025 Global Innovation Index, the biggest leap in Sub-Saharan Africa. The lesson is consistent: ecosystems grow when the support around founders is dependable, shared and connected, not when each start-up must assemble it alone. The momentum is real.
