German MP apologises for colonial atrocities

German Bundestag member Charlotte Neuhäuser (Die Linke) has apologised on behalf of her party for Germany's colonial atrocities and the genocide against the Nama and Ovaherero. “On behalf of Die Linke (The Left), which is supported by millions of German citizens, I want to offer our deepest apologies for the inhuman crimes and the genocide committed against your people in your country,” she said. She made her remarks during a meeting with Nama representatives in Keetmanshoop on Saturday. Speaking at a feedback session on genocide, reparations and restorative justice, organised by the Nama Traditional Leaders Association (NTLA) in Keetmanshoop on Saturday, Neuhäuser said a motion tabled and debated in the Bundestag on 14 October, with the support of delegations from the NTLA and Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA), called for long-overdue recognition and redress.
