Teacher training colleges to reduce intake
NEWS IN SHORT
The education ministry says it plans to encourage teacher training institutions to reduce intakes and reportedly engage the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) to guide students toward other fields.
This comes after some unemployed graduate teachers demonstrated for jobs and called for an end to interviews in the appointment process.
The ministry said a three-year plan to address classroom overcrowding is already underway and that several efforts have been made to limit the oversupply of qualified teachers.
Although the ministry acknowledged that classrooms are overcrowded in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Rundu and Katima Mulilo, it maintained that interviews will remain an essential part of the teacher recruitment process.
Nevertheless, the number of graduates, especially those qualified to teach Grades 1 to 4, continues to exceed the number of available teaching posts.
