Taps open, joy flows for Lüderitz homeowners

Homes constructed by members of the Namibia Shack Dwellers Federation (NSDF) in Area Seven, Lüderitz, have been connected to the town’s water reticulation system, with water now flowing from the homeowners’ taps.“We no longer have to collect water in plastic containers from the communal taps," said Veno Mununga, a member of the NSFD Lüderitz committee. "The challenge of carrying buckets of water on top of your head, which was a normal occurrence for us, has been solved,” he added. The project was sponsored by Logistic Support Services (LSS) at a cost of N$300 000.!Nami#Nus constituency councillor Suzan Ndjaleka and LSS representative Stefan Jacksch officially handed over the project and opened the taps for the beneficiaries on Saturday."You can now flush your toilet, wash your dishes and take a shower," Ndjaleka said.She urged the homeowners to "use this precious resource sparingly because water costs money. If you have any leakage, report it. Those who do not have access to running water yet just need to go and pay for their prepaid water meters at the town council."Happy to helpExplaining the involvement of LSS, Jacksch said: “Councillor Ndjaleka approached us, and we jumped on board."He added: "It took us two years, and I am happy it is done. We started in September 2023, and the last pipes arrived in September 2024. The rock in the area is very hard; the Shack Dwellers Federation members are my witnesses,” he noted. He acknowledged the supporters who came forward and assisted with completing the project successfully. “Wesco sponsored a generator, which helped a lot. The town council provided a jackhammer."Chris Hite from CK Civils provided the tools and machinery used during the installation.Tony Mbundu, representing the NSDF Lüderitz branch, thanked LSS for its support."You knew that we could not do this on our own, and when our councillor called for help on our behalf, you responded quickly. You stood with us and ensured that we gained access to running water," he said.
