Decade-old firefighting gear stuck in NAC storage - audit

The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) is still holding firefighting uniforms and gear from a N$692 300 purchase made about a decade ago, which the company found did not meet the required standard, according to a government audit.“During the tenure of Tamer El Kallawi (as chief executive officer), Namibia Airport Company procured fire fighting gears/ uniforms (PPE) not met (not fit for purpose) the standard, costing N$692 300,” a works and transport ministry audit report states.“Some of the uniforms are still at Eros Airport Storage to date,” the auditors added. The investigation, conducted in May by the ministry’s chief internal auditor, Lineekela Joseph, looked into governance and procurement at the company. In response to the audit findings, NAC said it will auction the uniforms.“The matter was duly noted, and the matter will be resolved in accordance with applicable policy and legal framework (items will be auctioned),” the airport company’s response, contained in the ministry's report, reads. The findings raise questions about how the protective gear was procured, why it was found unsuitable for operational use, and whether the supplier met the required specifications.Namibian Sun was unable to obtain answers to these questions.ˆNAC spokesperson Dan Kamati told Namibian Sun on Tuesday that the company is aware of the matter.“The consignment was procured around 2014/15 and signed off by those responsible at the time and included audited annual reports,” Kamati said.He said current chief executive officer Bisey /Uirab joined NAC in 2019 and was therefore unable to comment on a matter that occurred before his tenure.
