The Arandis Town Council concluded its office bearer elections on 22 May, formally establishing its management committee after a five-month delay that left the local authority without a full leadership structure since December.United Democratic Front (UDF) councillor Cecilie Haobes was elected as chairperson , while IPC councillors Rita Hoeses and Erastus Kandenge were elected as members.

A deputy mayor was not elected during the proceedings.

Mayor Barnabas Kambara welcomed the conclusion of the process, crediting the cooperation of opposition parties for enabling progress.

Kambara said the electorate now expects delivery and accountability, adding that the time has come to “hit the ground running”.

Kambara cautioned against political entitlement and called for leadership grounded in purpose and community service.

He said that holding office should not be at the expense of service delivery, describing such conduct as a destructive tendency that must be resisted.

The five-month delay in constituting the management committee had raised concerns about governance stability in Arandis, with key decisions and oversight functions stalled in the absence of a complete leadership structure.

The failure to elect a deputy mayor further raises questions about internal consensus and the council’s operational readiness.

When approached for comment on the causes of the delay and the absence of a deputy mayor, Arandis Town Council spokesperson Irene Jacobs responded: “Thank you for your query. Arandis Town Council has no comment at this time.”
