Rehoboth snake park wants to share knowledge
Nicholas Eksteen, a Rehoboth snake catcher with more than 30 years of experience, wants to establish a snake park in the Hardap Region to teach learners about local snake species, their behaviour and safe handling.
Eksteen began catching snakes at 15 under the guidance of his grandfather. Now he wants to pass on his knowledge to younger generations through practical, hands-on learning.
The proposed facility would help learners identify different species, understand the risks they pose and learn how to respond safely when encountering snakes in their communities. Eksteen also hopes to dispel common misconceptions and reduce fear by teaching young people about the reptiles and their role in Namibia’s wildlife.
He believes the snake park could become a valuable educational resource, promoting informed and responsible attitudes towards snakes.
