Hit-and-run leaves pedestrian dead near Omaruru

Police are searching for a suspect after a pedestrian was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident near Omaruru.

A pedestrian was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on the road between Omaruru and Kalkveld earlier this week.

According to the police, the incident occurred sometime between midnight and 06h00 on Tuesday about 11 km from Omaruru.

Police say an unknown suspect allegedly struck a pedestrian and fled the scene without reporting the accident or rendering assistance.

The victim was found dead at the scene and was later identified by colleagues as Lukas Tuhafeni Tateati. His age has not yet been confirmed.

The body was transported to the Walvis Bay mortuary, and the next of kin has been informed.

The suspect is facing possible charges of culpable homicide, reckless or negligent driving, failure to ascertain the nature of the accident, failure to render assistance to an injured person, and failure to report the accident.

The police in the Erongo Region have appealed to members of the public who may have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Detective Inspector Ndeshifilwa Teofelus at 081 327 2505 or the nearest police station.

Police investigations are ongoing.
