Otjiwarongo trio denied bail after US tourist robberyThree men accused of robbing two American tourists in Otjiwarongo on Monday were denied bail when they appeared in court on Wednesday.Vevangaune Mungendje (25), Willem Boois (33) and Martin Stephanus (34) were remanded in custody pending further police investigations into the alleged robbery.Otjozondjupa police spokesperson Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha said the suspects are from Windhoek and that the vehicle allegedly used in the incident has been impounded.The three were arrested near Kalkfeld shortly after the alleged robbery, following a police operation in which CCTV footage was used to track their vehicle after they fled Otjiwarongo.Mbeha told Regional Review on Monday that police had been alerted to the incident and subsequently traced the suspects as they travelled towards Kalkfeld.Police intercepted the vehicle and arrested the three men, with the tourists’ stolen belongings, including passports and cash, recovered during the operation. The recovered property has been valued at more than N$97 000.The tourists were staying at a hotel in Otjiwarongo when they reported the robbery. The incident prompted a police response that culminated in the arrests shortly afterwards.The suspects now remain in custody while police continue investigating the case.
