Four men have been found guilty of murdering well-known Walvis Bay businessman Hans-Jorg Möller, eight years after his death.

Möller was shot during an armed robbery in his home and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. His wife was also assaulted, while their children were at home during the incident.

Gottlieb Panduleni, David Tashiya, David Shekundja and Elly Hinaivali were found guilty in the Windhoek High Court on Monday by Judge Dinnah Usiku on charges of murder, attempted murder, burglary with intent to rob, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit burglary and possessing a firearm and ammunition without a licence.

Serious injuries

Hans-Jorg’s wife, Carol-Ann, was brutally assaulted during the incident and suffered serious injuries.

According to a doctor, her lower jaw was dislocated, she lost pieces of her teeth and her nose was broken. Carol-Ann still suffers from permanent and uncontrollable shaking, attributed to the trauma she endured that day.

Despite the trauma, doctors confirmed that her injuries did not affect her memory. She assisted the police in their investigation and identified the four men.

Carol-Ann told the court that she fought hard that night to protect her children. She apparently clung to the door handle of her children's room and pleaded with the criminals to take what they wanted and not hurt the children.

Panduleni was arrested later that evening and in his possession, among other things, a wallet with money and two photos of the Möllers' two daughters were found. In addition, he had a pistol with him which could be linked to the bullet that hit Möller during the robbery.

One acquitted

The fifth defendant who was believed to have driven the car used to flee the scene, Malakia Shiweda, was acquitted. During the hearing, Shiweda admitted to the court that he was in Walvis Bay with his four co-accused on the night of the robbery, but he argued that he was not present at the residence when the robbery took place.

He apparently received a call late at night to pick up his co-accused. The men returned to Windhoek the next day.

The four men who were found guilty will remain in custody until their next appearance on 15 July.
