US donates N$28m in equipment to health ministry

The health ministry last week received a large donation of office equipment valued at N$28 million from US-based health agencies to strengthen Namibia's health infrastructure.The equipment, including computers, laptops, printers, servers, network equipment, televisions, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, air conditioners and essential office furniture, will be distributed across various health facilities and administrative units.The ministry's executive director Penda Ithindi underscored the strategic importance of the equipment in supporting Namibia’s broader goal of achieving universal health coverage.“This handover is not just about equipment, furniture or tools. It is about empowering our healthcare workers with the resources they need to do their jobs effectively. It is equally about ensuring that our patients receive timely and dignified care," he said.Ithindi said the donation reflects months of coordinated efforts, including needs assessments, planning and logistical arrangements, led by the ministry with support from development partners.Vision into reality The event was attended by senior ministry officials, alongside key US government representatives including Chargé d'affaires of the US embassy in Namibia Brandon Hudspeth, acting US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention country director Peter Minchella, Pepfar coordinator Cheryl Amoroso and other US representatives. Ithindi further praised the US government for its consistent support, noting that the partnership has remained vital in the country’s response to key health challenges over the years.“Your support also reflects the spirit of collaboration that is central to the achievement of our national health goals and the sustainable development goals,” he said.In addition, he called on health workers and administrators to take collective responsibility for the effective use, care and integration of the donated equipment.“As we receive these items today, we must also commit ourselves to their responsible use, regular maintenance and integration into our service delivery frameworks," the ED said."Equipment alone cannot deliver services. It is our people, guided by policy and empowered by tools, who will transform our vision into reality," he added.
