Rössing Uranium has donated a patient transport bus valued at N$1.5 million to the health ministry in the Erongo region, highlighting its commitment to community welfare and corporate social responsibility.

The handover ceremony took place in Swakopmund on Monday, attended by key dignitaries including health minister Dr Esperance Luvindao and Swakopmund mayor Blasius Goraseb.

Speaking at the ceremony, Rössing Uranium managing director Johan Coetzee said the donation is part of the company’s broader efforts to strengthen public healthcare access.

“For Rössing Uranium, supporting the health sector is not charity; it is an investment in our communities and in the well-being of those who are unwell,” he said. He added that the company will also cover the bus’s maintenance and servicing costs for the next two years.

Coetzee noted that Rössing had earlier donated N$1.25 million to the ministry to upgrade health infrastructure in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Usakos.

“We believe that access to healthcare should not be limited by distance. This bus will support the region’s facilities in serving all patients,” he said.

Quality care a priority

In her acceptance speech, Dr Luvindao commended Rössing for its continued support of the health sector. She noted that while efficient patient transport is important, the ministry’s long-term goal is the decentralisation of healthcare services.

“Ultimately, we should not have to refer patients to other regions. We are working to ensure that every region has the capacity to provide quality care close to home,” she said.

Meanwhile, Goraseb described the donation as a timely contribution that will allow patients, particularly from outlying areas, to access medical facilities safely.

“This gesture reflects Rössing Uranium’s partnership and commitment to the people of Swakopmund and Erongo. A healthy community is a productive community,” the mayor said.

The new bus will serve as a resource to improve patient transport within the region, bridging the gap between healthcare facilities and those in need of specialised care.
