Mining sector

Geolin Coleman

With over 15 000 workers and a 10–14% GDP contribution, Namibia's mining sector continues to be the backbone of the country's economy. Diamonds, uranium, gold, and zinc are the key drivers of this sector's robust growth. Sustainability and innovation have been shaped in recent years by expansion initiatives, increased exploration funding, and a new generation of talented people.

The Namibian mining industry comes with many opportunities and challenges, including dependence on volatile global commodity prices, as well as limited local value addition beyond raw exports.

Environmental pressures, including water scarcity affecting uranium mining, are another challenge.

With challenges come opportunities, such as expanding into battery minerals (zinc and copper) for the global energy transition, increased investment in exploration and technology, and a growing emphasis on sustainability, diversity, and youth empowerment, reflected in the professionals' career journeys.

She works in metallurgical and process engineering in Namibia’s mining industry, specialising in laboratory analysis, process monitoring, and plant operations. Her journey reflects resilience, having transitioned from Electrical to Chemical Engineering to pursue her passion for process optimisation and industrial problem-solving. As a WomEng alumna and Ambassador, she is committed to empowering young women in engineering while contributing to discussions on innovation and diversity. She believes Namibia’s natural resources should drive sustainable growth and youth empowerment.

Ronaldo – Chemist

Ronaldo joined the mining industry after discovering his passion for chemistry in his second year of studies. Holding a Bachelor of Science Honours degree from NUST, he combines strong theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory training. At Tschudi Mine and Intertek Genalysis, he analyses ore, leach solution, and process water samples using classical and instrumental methods to ensure accurate results for plant operations. Skilled in AAS, titration, pH, and conductivity meters, he balances speed with precision under pressure. Ronaldo’s work supports production, safety, and compliance, while he aims to grow into senior roles with expertise in instrumentation, data analysis, and process control.

Peres Hoaeb – Diesel Mechanic

Peres comes from Arandis and works at Beifang Mining Services at the Husab Mine. Inspired by his father, a Lab Technician at Rössing Uranium Mine, he pursued mechanics after early training at home, fixing a Toyota bakkie as his father’s tool boy. He later studied at the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology, earning his Trade Certificate. Peres ensures machines are available for production through preventive programmes, inspections, and expert repairs. Skilled in diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical troubleshooting, and drivetrain repair, he works under pressure in harsh environments, maintaining safety and reliability.

Daniel Nghipandulwa - Boilermaker

Daniel is a semi-skilled Boilermaker, specialising in maintenance, fabrication, and repair of heavy mining equipment and plant structures. With welding experience, he earned a silver medal at the 2025 Namibia WorldSkills welding competition. He studied boilermaking for three years at the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology and holds a National N3 Certificate in Engineering Studies, which strengthened his technical foundation. His responsibilities include welding, fabrication, inspections, and shutdown maintenance projects, ensuring equipment safety and reliability. Daniel’s work reduces breakdowns, improves productivity, and extends equipment lifespan, while he continues to grow towards becoming a fully skilled artisan.

Nooni Shilongo – Mechanical Engineer

Nooni, born in Otjiwarongo and raised in Omundaungilo, is the first from his village to earn an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He studied at the University of Namibia, where he also served as SRC Vice-President, and graduated in 2025. His passion for mining grew during industrial attachments, leading him to join Navachab Gold Mine as a Graduate Mechanical Engineering Intern in Fleet Management. Skilled in SAP, Excel, and mine monitoring systems, he coordinates breakdowns, maintenance, and safety compliance. With certifications in Operations Management and ongoing MSc studies, Nooni aims to advance into leadership in integrated operations and predictive maintenance.

Ashley Bam – Chemist

Ashley is a goal-driven professional from Kunene Region, raised in Tsumeb, with seven years of experience in Namibia’s mining industry. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and an Honours in Applied Physics, complemented by workplace training in laboratory analysis, metallurgy, and safety systems. Starting as a Lab Assistant at Uis Tin Mining in 2019, she progressed to Chemist, now overseeing laboratory quality control, analytical testing, equipment calibration, and safety management. Skilled in ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and XRF spectrometers, Ashley supports operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Passionate about mentoring, she aspires to leadership roles shaping Namibia’s mining future.

Johannes Gomes – Mechanical Engineer

Johannes, born in Outapi and raised across Namibia, is a Graduate Mechanical Engineer at Rössing Uranium. Inspired by his grandfather and father, both respected mechanics, he pursued Mechanical Engineering at the University of Namibia, where he also held leadership roles, including Speaker of the Student Parliament. His passion for mining grew from his upbringing in Oranjemund and was strengthened through internships at Rössing. Today, Johannes is part of the Graduate Development Programme, gaining exposure to plant systems, reliability, and maintenance strategies. Skilled in problem-solving, teamwork, and CAD tools, he aims to advance into leadership and drive sustainable innovation in Namibia’s mining industry.

Lameck Haufiku – Training Officer

Lameck is a Boilermaker Training Officer at NIMT Arandis Campus, dedicated to mentoring and preparing young Namibians for technical careers in mining and engineering. His journey began in 2016 as a trainee at NIMT, gaining practical exposure through attachments at Erundu Welding, Turn Tech Namibia, and Swakop Uranium. He holds a National Trade Certificate, N3 from South Africa, Level 3 with NIMT, and a TVET Diploma from NUST. Skilled in welding, fabrication, safety, and leadership, Lameck trains students in both theory and practice, emphasising discipline and workplace safety. Passionate about skills development, he aims to grow Namibia’s future artisans.

Junias Ndeunjema – Geologist

Junias Ndeunjema from Otjiwarongo, is a Junior Exploration Geologist at B2Gold Namibia. Growing up near Okorusu and Otjikoto mines inspired his interest in mining, later strengthened through studies at the University of Namibia Southern Campus in Keetmanshoop. His career began with internships at QKR Navachab Gold Mine, where he gained practical exposure to exploration and mining operations. Awarded the Antone Lombard Bursary, Junias joined B2Gold in 2025, focusing on core logging, geological mapping, and supervising drilling rigs.
