Students told not to bankroll their girlfriends
The gender equality ministry has called on male students at the University of Namibia’s Eduardo dos Santos Engineering Campus to prioritise their education and resist financial pressures in their relationships.
During a recent engagement session for male students, acting chief development planner Severinus Heita emphasised that it is not the responsibility of students to provide financial support to their girlfriends while they are still reliant on their parents.
“Why take on parental responsibilities? You shouldn’t feel pressured by emotional obligations. Such responsibilities arise only when you are married,” Heita advised the students.
The engagement is part of the ministry’s initiative to involve male students in higher education as partners in promoting gender equality, combating gender-based violence and enhancing HIV awareness.
One student, who preferred to remain anonymous, said many young men feel compelled to provide monthly allowances to their partners. “We are pressured into giving financial support to retain our relationships. If we don't, our girlfriends often turn to ‘sugar daddies’ or wealthier men for money, leaving us feeling abandoned. This is a significant source of stress for us,” he said.
Heita encouraged the students not to fear losing a relationship over financial issues. He also cautioned against deceiving parents to obtain funds. “Do not ask your parents for N$2000 only to divert it to your girlfriend instead of using it for your own needs. Such behaviour can lead to stress and even suicidal thoughts, as one becomes vulnerable to being exploited,” he warned.
Heita also underscored the importance of mental health and urged students to concentrate on their studies so that they can contribute to national development.
On the topic of HIV prevention, he advised students to practise abstinence while still in school, as they may not yet be prepared to face the consequences of sexual relationships.
The ministry's outreach initiative commenced at Oshakati campus on Monday and will continue to additional institutions throughout the region.
