Man drowns in Orange River
A 32-year-old man drowned in the Orange River near Aussenkehr on Saturday after he jumped in to save another man from drowning.
According to the police, the deceased was swept away by the strong current when he tried to help the other man. He was part of a group of men who had been swimming in the river.
The other man managed to get out of the water. The group searched alongside the river for the deceased, but there was no sign of his body.
The matter was reported to the police, and they dispatched a team but could not find him. The search continues.
Assault, rape
In another incident at Oranjemund, a 29-year-old man was arrested on Friday after he assaulted his 30-year-old girlfriend, who was found lying unconscious in front of their house.
According to the police, the man came home that night and started playing loud music while his girlfriend’s one-year-old son was sleeping.
She asked him to turn it down, but he refused. When she pulled the plug on the music system, he started assaulting her until she fell unconscious. She was found by members of the public at around 02:00 and taken to the Namdeb Private Hospital.
Stock theft, drugs
On Saturday, a man was arrested at the Oshainghava village in Okongo for hitting another man with the handle of a hoe during an argument. They were working in a mahangu field at the time.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was transferred from Okongo State Hospital to Onandjokwe Hospital.
Meanwhile, two men were arrested for stock theft – to the value of N$30 800 - in Schlip.
It is alleged the men, aged 38 and 47, chased 14 sheep from a camp at Farm Witdam into their employer’s farm and slaughtered two of the sheep. The other 12 sheep were taken to a kraal. All 12 sheep and two carcasses were recovered.
Two Angolan nationals were also arrested on Friday in the mountains near Opuwo’s Orutjandja location during a police operation when they were found in possession of cannabis. The men are aged 27 and 42. The weight and value of the drugs are yet to be determined.
