Power cuts threaten Helao Nafidi trade

Helao Nafidi mayor Darius Shaalukeni has warned that persistent power outages are threatening trade, small businesses and investment, describing the crisis as a serious economic risk that extends beyond an infrastructure challenge.Speaking at the official opening of the 19th Helao Nafidi Business Expo on Wednesday, Shaalukeni briefed deputy minister of works and transport Hans Haikali on the town’s industrial and economic progress but warned that electricity interruptions were crippling business activity."We have the challenge of the persistent power outage in our town. It is not only an infrastructure challenge but also a critical economic risk that threatens the stability and vibrancy of our markets," Shaalukeni said.He said frequent and prolonged outages disrupt traders, artisans and retail outlets, leading to lost sales, spoiled goods and diminished consumer confidence.Small businesses, which form the backbone of the local economy, are particularly vulnerable, as they rely on uninterrupted power for cooling, processing and payment systems, he added."When these outages occur, they create a ripple effect: customers delay purchases, suppliers halt deliveries and overall market activity slows, reducing revenue for both merchants and the municipality," he said.Shaalukeni called for urgent, multi-pronged action, including upgrading and maintaining the power grid, investing in backup and renewable energy solutions, and ensuring transparent communication about outage causes and timelines."Without sustained and strategic intervention, the market will continue to suffer and the town's progress will be hampered," the mayor stressed.The business expo will conclude on 1 November.
