Countdown: Africa Comic Con, Here I Come

I usually get excited about all the conventions I attend, but going to Johannesburg is always special. This year’s Comic Con Africa takes place from 24-27 September in the City of Gold, and once again I will be part of the invited media. It is a great privilege that I can do what I love as a job.

When it comes to Comic Con Africa, there are usually five things I look forward to the most.

First is the people. I love being among people who love what I love, and I love seeing them dress up as their favourite characters. As a journalist, it is so much fun to learn more about their creative processes and hear why these characters mean so much to them.

Secondly, I am crazy about all the activities. A few years ago I could enter the Upside Down of Stranger Things with Netflix, and afterwards I even participated in Squid Game. I could also experience the different Disney stories and play several other games, including a few board games I had never heard of before.

Third is probably the most important, and that is the international and local guests. I can listen to actors and filmmakers talk for hours. After all, they are the reason for The Movie Guy. Last year I could sit down and chat with Misha Collins, who played in Supernatural. I think it was the highlight of my career, and it is a moment I will cherish forever. I even got him to say !nxa.

Fourthly, I love the different panels. Every Comic Con has a unique programme, and every time I learn something new. I have learned how to become a better writer, I have learned more about filmmaking and I have learned more about storytelling.

Lastly, I am just crazy about all of it. From the food to the performances, and the fact that I can write about it, is the cherry on the cake. I usually try to cover as much of Comic Con as possible for articles and videos. Over the past few years I have also done movie quizzes at the conventions, and it has been absolutely fantastic. I don’t just want to be a journalist who walks around the convention floor looking for stories, photos or videos; I also want to make it special for other people.

I am an introvert, but Comic Con allows me to come out of my shell for a few days. It gives me the opportunity to be myself and just have fun with everyone around me. I think I have made most of my closest friends through events like Comic Con.

Once again I am raising funds to cover my expenses to go to Comic Con. The funds mostly go towards transport and accommodation. As the only Namibian media representative, I am deeply honoured that I have been invited, and I cannot wait to show Namibia what Comic Con Africa looks like.
