Meuwesen shows world-class accuracy

Windhoek Archery Club hosted a target archery competition last Saturday and Sunday in preparation for the upcoming 76th South African national championships and regional championships in Johannesburg at the end of March 2026.

Archers from Atlantis Archery Club in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund Archery Club and Windhoek Archery Club attended the two-day competition at the Yellowstone Trails field.

The competitions’ sequence of events had the archers shoot rounds of WA 720 on Saturday and one on Sunday, testing not only the accuracy of the archers but, also endurance.

Each WA 720 consists of 72 scoring arrows, with each arrow accumulating a maximum of 10 points.

The president of the Archery Association of Namibia (AAN), Jannie Meuwesen, secured his spot on the Namibian team to participate in South Africa by shooting a world class score of 707 out of 720 on Sunday. This is a new Namibian record and proves Meuwesen’s standing as one of the top archers in the country and on the continent.

While the weather conditions on Saturday were not perfect for archery with strong winds and intermittent rain for most of the day, the archers welcomed the rain as this was perfect for preparing for potential adverse weather conditions during March in Johannesburg.

A total of 216 scoring arrows (72 x 3) were shot per archer at a distance of 50 metres, which is the World Archery Target Archery distance. Archers in the under-15 age class shot at a distance of 40 m and performed very well.
