RA launches mobile vehicle testing station

The Roads Authority (RA) of Namibia took a significant step towards enhancing road safety with the official launch of a mobile vehicle testing station in Rehoboth last week. The ceremony was attended by works and transport minister John Mutorwa and RA head Conrad Lutombi.Mutorwa emphasised the importance of trust and reliability in the operation of the mobile testing station, acknowledging that human beings - with emotions and shortcomings - are the ones responsible for its functioning. "If anything goes wrong, we shall not blame the mobile testing station, but the person(s) who manage or operate it,” he said.The primary objective of the testing station on wheels is to provide essential NaTIS services to areas where there are no fully-fledged NaTIS centres.It further forms a crucial part of the RA’s decongestion strategy, aiming to reduce long queues at NaTIS offices across the country. The mobile station will offer vehicle testing and will cater to towns that currently only offer over-the-counter NaTIS services.No more long-distance travelLutombi reaffirmed the RA’s commitment to make NaTIS services more accessible, particularly to those in remote areas. "The mobile vehicle testing station brings testing directly to the people, eliminating the need for long-distance travel and making the process more convenient," he said.The mobile vehicle testing station is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment to ensure accurate and efficient testing of various aspects, including brakes, lights and overall safety compliance. It will travel across the country, with an initial focus on the Hardap and //Karas regions for the next three months. The RA intends to procure four more mobile vehicle testing stations as funds become available, extending the reach of these services to various regions, Lutombi said.The institution also announced plans to acquire a ‘NaTIS on wheels’ truck, which will provide over-the-counter NaTIS services such as vehicle registration, licencing and learner licence testing. This initiative aims to serve communities where no NaTIS services are currently available.
