Godhardt Ovaua Kuaere's every dance move tells a story as he reaches for the stars

For Namibian contemporary and acrobatic dancer Godhardt Ovaua Kuaere, movement has never just been about technique; it's about connection, emotion and telling stories.“I’ve always wanted to tell stories, to create work that allows people to connect with their emotions and see themselves in the movement,” he says.That desire didn’t begin in a studio. It started at home in his backyard, where he trained alone for nearly two years.Every day after school, he would spend hours dancing, experimenting and crafting routines from scratch.There were no formal lessons, no structured guidance, just instinct, discipline and a deep love for the art.At the time he didn’t know where dance would take him.That passion eventually led to a turning point when a friend helped him access a training space at the College of the Arts in Windhoek.There he was able to refine his skills and grow not only as a dancer but also as a storyteller.Excelling on stage Since then, his journey has expanded beyond Namibia’s borders.He has competed in six competitions, including major events in South Africa, where he placed second against strong competition. In acrobatics, he has also faced off against around 180 dancers, an experience that tested both his physical strength and creative expression.A defining moment came when he qualified for several prestigious international competitions, including the Dancewave Competition Finals in Belgium, Talent America in New York City, and the Global Dance Open Finals in Birmingham, United Kingdom.These opportunities brought him close to representing Namibia on the global stage.However, his rise has not been without challenges.Due to financial constraints and unsuccessful attempts to secure sponsorship, he was unable to attend the competitions.“It was especially important to me because I would have been the only Namibian competing. In the future, I would truly love the opportunity to represent my country globally," he said, undaunted by the setbacks so far.Giving voiceHis work continues to focus on storytelling, particularly themes of vulnerability.Through his choreography, he explores raw and honest emotions, using movement as a language where words often fall short.For Kuaere, dance is a way to communicate feelings that are sometimes difficult to put into words.Looking ahead, he hopes to continue growing as both a performer and choreographer, creating meaningful work that resonates with audiences worldwide.More importantly, he remains determined to one day represent Namibia on international stages.
