The People’s Republic of China last week officially handed over the satellite data receiving station, constructed with Chinese support, to Namibia. The project is based on a long-standing cooperation agreement between the two countries, first signed in 2000 and renewed in 2018. China provided both technical and financial assistance and trained Namibian personnel. The new station significantly strengthens Namibia’s capacity to receive and process satellite data to support disaster management, national security, and the sustainable management of natural resources. More accurate data will also be available for agriculture and land-use planning. This will enable more informed policymaking and improve the quality of public service delivery.

The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) will manage and operate the facility going forward. The aim is to ensure the reliable use of satellite data for planning, resource management, and national security.
